Why Offer Workplace Safety Training?

From compliance obligations to preventing injuries and saving lives, there are a lot of good reasons to offer safety training at your business. Whether your company is a multi-location global conglomerate or a one-room start-up, there are compelling reasons to ensure your employees have the knowledge and skills to keep themselves and their coworkers safe, and help your management avoid costly fines.

Some benefits of providing safety training may not be as obvious as others. An article at the Huffington Post reminds employers that a robust safety culture can help a business build staff loyalty, provide positive press for an organization and reduce hidden costs by lowering insurance premiums.

Above all other reasons is the one that may be the most obvious. Workplace safety training, together with staying in regulatory compliance, works. According to OSHA:

"In the four decades since the Occupational Safety and Health Act (OSH Act) was signed into law, workplace deaths and reported occupational injuries have dropped by more than 60 percent."

Training is a key component at the core of the OSH Act:

“…provide for the establishment and supervision of programs for the education and training of employers and employees in the recognition, avoidance, and prevention of unsafe or unhealthful working conditions in employments covered by this Act [29 USC 1900].”

A lot has changed since the OSH Act of 1970 established a regulatory body to ensure American companies provided appropriate safety training. The technology revolution sparked a major paradigm shift when Internet connectivity made it easy for employers to get excellent training content in front of their workers.

With an online training solution like HSI’s Summit Connect plans, gone are the bad old days of day-long classes, finding and scheduling an instructor or losing productivity time for travel to training sessions. Employers choose the courses they need and deploy them through user friendly learning management systems such as HSI’s Encompass platform, allowing workers to manage their training in a way that best suits their needs and the needs of the organization.
