Frequently Asked Questions

How do I become an HSI brand Instructor?

There are two methods of achieving authorization: 1. Successful completion of an appropriate Instructor Development Course. 2. Through reciprocity, i.e., holding current Instructor credentials with another nationally recognized and reputable organization or equivalent. Affiliation with an HSI brand Training Center is a requirement for authorization as an Instructor. You can either establish your own Training Center or affiliate with an existing Training Center. Instructor authorization lasts for a period of two years. Applications for authorization must be submitted to HSI by the Director of the Training Center.

How do I establish a new HSI brand Training Center?

Establishing an HSI brand Training Center is easy and cost-effective. It only requires that the organization or individual: • Complete Training Center Application • Have at least one affiliated Instructor (new or transferred) • Purchase the Instructor Start-up materials for the programs intended to offer. We recommend reviewing the Training Center Administrative Manual (TCAM) to understand the responsibilities and requirements of operating a Training Center.

What is required to teach 24-7 EMS programs in my organization?

All EMS Instructors who wish to use 24-7 EMS training materials must meet qualification standards in order for their students to receive credit in their state. Please check with your state EMS office to ensure Instructor criteria are met.

Where can I find the 24-7 EMS CECBEMS curriculum approval numbers?

You can find links to the CECBEMS curriculum approval numbers under the Quality Assurance Center

Where can I find more information about taking a blended training course?

Blended training is an option of delivery for the Training Center offering the course that you want to take. You can find a Training Center in your area and request a blended learning class using the Training Center directory tool located under the Training Resources page. You can find it at HSI Home>Training Resources>Find a Training Center.

I misplaced my Instructor card, how do I get my duplicate?

Your Training Center Director may request a duplicate Instructor card for you by using the Instructor Status Change Form. There is a $5 fee to send the duplicate card. HSI will send the duplicate card to the address indicated by the Training Center Director on the form. The Training Center Director can find the Instructor Status Change Form in the Training Center Manager online under Documents>Training Center Tools>Administrative Tools>Administrative Documents.

Have ASHI and MEDIC First Aid emergency care programs been externally reviewed, accepted, approved and accredited?

Yes, HSI works on a regular and ongoing basis with hundreds of federal and state authorities to ensure regulatory compliance. ASHI and MEDIC First Aid programs have been reviewed, accepted, approved or have satisfied the requirements of numerous state and federal agencies, including the Department of Labor (OSHA) and the Department of Homeland Security (USCG). Additionally, both ASHI CPRPro and ASHI ACLS, our professional level resuscitation courses, have been nationally accredited by the Continuing Education Coordinating Board for Emergency Medical Services (CECBEMS).

Do I need to have a current certification card to participate in a recertification course?

In most cases, yes; HSI allows Training Centers, at their discretion, to give students a 30 day grace period to attend a refresher course. Students whose certifications have expired for more than 30 days will need to take the initial course over again.

Is there a minimum age to take a CPR and/or First Aid course?

Age is not a reasonable measure of an individual's ability to learn or perform CPR or first aid. A person of any age who has the physical ability to perform the required skills may participate in these programs. Instructors bear the responsibility of ensuring that each participant meets the core knowledge and skill objectives for successful completion.

Is there a minimum age to become an Instructor for HSI?

The minimum age to participate in an ASHI or MEDIC First Aid Instructor Development Course is 17. All EMS Instructors who wish to use 24-7 EMS training materials must meet qualification standards in order for their students to receive credit in their state. Please check with your state EMS office to ensure Instructor criteria are met.

How do I give feedback on an HSI course?

24-7 students have the option to use the online mechanism provided at the end of the blended or online course. ASHI and MEDIC First Aid students have the option to complete an evaluation at the end of the course or complete the online to Rate Your Program.

How do I recognize whether an ASHI or MEDIC First Aid certification card is legitimate?

You can find samples of our current certification cards in the QA & Approval Resources page of the HSI website. To find this page click HSI Home>Quality Assurance Center>QA & Approval Resources and select the brand. The brand page will provide a link to the current certification cards.

What are the qualifications to upgrade to an Instructor Trainer for ASHI or MEDIC First Aid?

Authorization as a current HSI brand Instructor is a prerequisite to upgrade to an Instructor Trainer. The Instructor can either take the online Instructor Trainer Upgrade Course or take a classroom IT upgrade course with an approved HSI Master Instructor Trainer. Upon completion of the IT course (whether online or classroom) the Training Center director to which the Instructor is affiliated will submit the Instructor Status Change Form to HSI for final authorization.

All of the 24-7 EMS courses are approved for between 1.5 - 3 hours of CEU's; varying based on whether the course was taken online or in the classroom. ASHI CPR Pro and ASHI ACLS courses are approved for continuing education credits for EMS personnel. Each ASHI Training Center must register their location individually with CECBEMS in order to provide continuing education credits to EMS students. MEDIC First Aid does not offer professional level programs.
