Rescuer saves her former PE Teacher

May 19, 2009

An 81 yr old patient lost consciousness as her daughter yelled for help.  As she slumped over in the exam chair, she regurgitated.
Joan got her onto the floor, determined that she was not breathing, and could not find a pulse.  Joan then dialed 911, explained the emergency and gave directions to the clinic.  She then put down the phone, cleared the elderly woman's mouth and gave two chest compressions.  She then attempted to open the airway, position her head, and provide rescue breaths.

Joan was regurgitated on repeatedly, but continued to clear the woman's airway until she became responsive.  She then monitored her breathing and heart beat until paramedics arrived and took over.  The patient, Joan's former PE Teacher, long since retired, made a complete recovery.
